For those of you who are lucky to have an attic it’s generally advised that you buy an attic fan. There are different types available however buying one which is solar power offers a number of advantages. Not only is it great for those who want to reduce their impact on the environment but it also means you don’t have the hassle of installing loads of cables. Having an electrical engineer in your home can be very expensive so buying solar power can save you a lot of money on installation and running costs.

One of the problems faced with attics is moisture and your solar attic fan can be set up to work automatically as it’s able to store power gained from the sun. Because it’s solar powered you don’t have to do much to install it and they are very simple units so the chance of them breaking down is minimised.

You don’t have to live in the middle of a desert to experience hot temperatures. Most places in the world will suffer at least a few days or weeks or raging heat. Most people living in hot climates will already have some air con units installed in their homes but for the rest of us who live in a temperate climate, this is not something we normally have the luxury of. Even if you do have air con units or cold air fans, the cost of powering these can be astronomical. Energy costs are becoming more and more expensive and less affordable so it’s important that we look for alternatives such as solar power.

If you have ever had to go into your attic whilst there is a heat wave you will feel like you’ve just walked into an oven. It’s so hot you may even feel as if you’re going to pass out. Luckily an attic fan will transfer the hot air in your attic outside bringing the temperature of your attic back down to a much more tolerable temperature.

Attic fans along with gable ventilators work on the same principal of having a solar panel positioned on the roof. The panels takes the energy from the sun’s rays and this energy is then stored into battery so that the ventilation can work even at night or when it’s very cloudy. Although installation is quite easy if you are used to DIY, having the solar panel placed on the roof is the part which you may find a bit more difficult. For those of you who are used to carrying out DIY tasks in the house you should find this easy, otherwise you can just get a tradesperson in to do the job for you.

Designed to allow light and air in through solid walls, windows are a staple of any basic architecture. Most homes and businesses have windows for both practical purposes of light, as well as for aesthetic value. Windows can be made from a variety of material, including glass, plexi-glass, plastics, and more.

How and Why Do Windows Allow Light In?

Daylight needs to be both allowed and controlled, and many windows are designed to allow for customization of the amount of light that goes through. Skylights and open windows allow for the radiance of the sun to get into the room, while sills and overhangs often prevent daylight from getting into the structure.

Commercial contractors often struggle with allowing ample daylight through the window. This is because many local and national governments have established minimum energy codes that contractors must meet. The preservation of energy is important to most established nations, and it is often much more difficult, and energy deficient, to maintain temperatures in rooms with large windows that allow a lot of light in.

How Do We Use Windows for Decor?

Whether or not most homeowners realize it, windows play a pivotal role in the overall decor and atmosphere of their home. Although even standard square windows can act as a design element, many windows are of a unique design and composition. When establishing the decor for a room, the room layout and the windows are a great place from which to start. Living room windows are often great decor elements if they are designed horizontally to allow ample light and to take up plenty of design space on an otherwise empty wall. In bedrooms, many people choose to place sitting areas and furniture near windows for reading, writing, and relaxing.

Why Did We Ever Start Designing Windows?

Warmth and safety were the two main reasons why windows were established on housing designs. Allowing the sun through the windows provided warmth in the home, while the window also provided a way to watch for potential attackers. Early on, windows were nothing more than holes cut out of the structure. Eventually, people began added an early shutter system that allowed the windows to be opened or closed to allow or prohibit light from getting in.

It was not uncommon to see paper windows in most lower class homes around the world until the dawn of the 17th century. Until that time, it was mostly nobility alone who had glass windows.

How are Windows Classified?

As previously mentioned, windows come in a variety of styles and designs. These include casement windows, which are cranked to open and close them. A user turns the crank to open the window, and turns it the other way back to close the window. Most casement windows also feature locks so that, once fully closed, the window can be secured against being opened from the outside. The hinges on these types of windows are designed to allow for easy operation of the crank handle.

Gliding windows are, as their name suggests, windows that glide along a horizontal system. The ease with which these open and close make them quite popular in residences. While gliding windows are popular for their functionality, other windows are popular for their design. These include bay windows, which feature angles at the wall and ceiling to provide an additional design element.

Other popular windows include sash windows, round top windows, polygon windows, and others.

What Color Are Windows?

Although most windows come in standard neutral colors like white and beige, more and more windows are featuring a wide spectrum of colors. These windows allow homeowners and business owners to design their rooms around the decor of the window. If, for instance, a bold room is desired, the window may be painted bright red or black. These allow the designer to then create the rest of the decor of the room around the color of the window. Whether you are seeking cool colors or hot passion in your decor, the windows that will complement your designs are available.

What Design Styles Are Available for Windows?

The style of the window largely depends on the architectural design of the structure. For instance, a modern, contemporary home or business would likely feature contemporary windows with straight lines, few or no panes, and clear class. Colonial homes, likewise, would feature many-paned sash windows. And grandiose homes might include windows with remarkable embellishments and lavish designs such as stained glass or unique shapes and colors.

One would look at a stainless steel building and not believe that it could be turned into a residential home. There are many components that stainless steel buildings lack that homes must have, so the work involved may be rather extensive. However, stainless steel buildings tend to be less expensive than the average home and may even still cost less if converted into a residential home.

But can it be done?

Yes it can. Believe it or not, a group of architects in 2006 actually turned steel shipping containers into homes. Because of this innovative accomplishment, they proved that such a feat is possible and have opened the doors to more steel structures being converted into residential homes. It first started with the military using steel storage containers as offices, showers, and bunkers.

It is true that these structures are lacking many of the components required for a home such as wood, but many of these buildings actually have teak floors and are insulated. The lack of components hasn’t hindered designers from turning steel buildings into residential designs since 1982. However, it isn’t something we see often, but the point is that it is actually being done. It is actually growing in popularity and there are architecture firms all over the world cashing in on the benefits.

They call these “Quick Houses’ and they can be two-stories at 2000 square feet with large glass windows and skylights. Such a structure is built by using 5 storage buildings, which provides the owner with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The price range can be anywhere between $76,000 and $160,000 depending on how much space the owner needs. This actually comes out to be around $100 or less per square foot.
The price is actually the same if not less than an actual home built from scratch.

The steel building is an existing structure that can be built upon by adding insulation if needed, carpeting the floors, adding drywall to the walls and actually creating rooms out of multiple buildings being sealed together. Bathrooms can be installed as well as heating and cooling systems. The possibilities seem to be endless, so the imagination can go a long way when turning a steel building into a home.

However, it is the building codes that tend to get in the way. Although steel buildings are stronger than other construction means, there are hurdles that must be taken care of before building can begin. There are some communities that do allow steel building construction and then again there are communities that do not. That simply comes down to the fact that new things tend to be accepted slower than the old. The truth is, though, that the fact that steel buildings can be converted into residential homes will eventually catch on and the industry will be booming.

Just think, the next time a home is built next door, it could be a steel building being converted into a residential home. Doing so provides strength and security that other construction means cannot do. Sure, it is a rather odd idea, but think about how steel can stand up to the elements. Those investing in a steel building to be converted into a residential home are more likely to have their home standing after a natural disaster than those who do not have steel homes.

Selecting your first table saw can be very frustrating due to the huge selection available to the consumer today. Table Saws come in all shapes, sizes and are designed for a variety of applications. Buying your first table saw can be a nail biting experience, with a few tips, anyone can choose a table saw that will give them many years of reliable service.

Here are some tips on choosing your first table saw.

Fence: The fence is the sliding component of the table saw. The fence is used when you feed the wood onto the table and into the saw. The quality of the fence will factor in on the final cost of the table saw. The better quality of the fence that comes with the saw, the higher the price. Most contractor saws have fair quality fences, but not all. For normal applications, a fair quality fence will be more than enough for most applications and certainly good enough for the occasional user. Average quality fences are okay for beginners and weekend handy men, but will lack the quality that a cabinet maker needs. You have plenty of choices in third party fences so don’t loose sleep if your saw comes with an average fence.

Tilt: Most saws tilt for precision cutting. Table saws tilt right or left. Many years ago, table saws only came with a right tilt with the exception of some professional cabinet models. These days, you can get right or left tilting table saws. Right tilts are easier cutting precision angles and preferred by many. Right tilt saws are the most popular and come with more accessories than left tilt table saws.

Miter gauge: Table saws come with something called mitre gauges. There are two slots that are machined into the cast iron tabletop where the mitre gauge is inserted. This is where you guide the wood. Just as with the the tabletop, the mitre gauge that comes with the saw are of average quality. You can buy better mitre gauges than what come with the table saw. Try inserting the mitre gauge into the slots and check to see how snug they fit. Do not choose one with a loose fit. You want one that fits snug.

Size Matters: The most common table saw motor is either a 1 1/2 or 2 horsepower motor in the contractors models. The professional cabinet saws use a 3 to 5 horsepowered motor. For most applications, the 1 1/2 or 2 horsepower motor on the contractor saw has enough power for any cutting application. Just remember to take it slow and easy and let the saw blade do the cutting.

Saw blade: 10 inch blade models are the most popular, however, many of the most expensive cabinet saws have a 12-inch blade. The type of blade is more important than the size. Table saw blades come in a variety shape and types. Combination blades are the most popular and the ones you should use until you become more experienced in the operation of the table saw with different types of wood and cuts. It’s very important that you keep your blades clean and replace or sharpen them when dull.

Tabletop: The tabletop is the most component part of the saw. You’ll find a wide difference of quality among tabletops. Don’t scrimp on the table top, it pays to buy a high quality tabletop. Make sure the tabletop is as flat as possible if you want trouble free operation. Not all tabletops are flat and the ones that aren’t make it difficult to make precision cuts. You can reduce your chances of future problems by going with a tabletop from a reputable table saw manufacturer.

With these tips, a consumer should be more than able to choose the correct table saw for nearly any application you can think of. Just be sure to study the owners manual and any related documentation that comes with your new table saw.

Wallpaper can transform a room and make a huge difference in its feel and appearance. Today, wallpapers come in a huge range of exciting patterns and colors – making it easier than ever to complement your home furnishings. Hanging wallpaper is relatively easy to learn but does require attention to detail, especially when hanging patterned wallpaper, which requires matching the seams.

Before beginning, you will need to assemble some tools for the job: Wallpaper, a flat work surface, tape measure and level, utility knife, ladder, drop cloth, sandpaper, spackle and putty knife, and a smoothing brush.

If your wallpaper will be hung on new drywall, make sure to prime the wall first with wallpaper primer to help the paper adhere to the wall. For old walls, first wash dirt or dust off with warm, soapy water, followed by sanding over any chipped paint. Old wallpaper can be removed by using wallpaper remover and a putty knife.

Fill any existing holes and cracks in the walls with putty. If left uncovered, these holes and cracks will show through the paper once it’s hung and can even lead to tears in the wallpaper. Allow the spackle to dry and then sand lightly until the surface is smooth.

Choose a starting place in the room where your first strip of wallpaper will match up with the last strip of wallpaper you hang. Specifically, choose a corner in a room behind a door or near where your curtains will hang so that any mismatch will be less obvious. You want the focal point of your room to have the fewest seams. Use a level to measure out from your starting point and draw a vertical straight edge on the wall. This line marks where your first strip of wallpaper will be placed.

Then, lay the wallpaper print side down, on your working surface. First measure and then cut the strip to the proper length. You may add a couple of inches at the top and bottom of the paper, which will be timed off later to ensure you have measured enough paper. Measure and cut several strips of paper at one time, making sure to match the pattern.

Most wallpaper is pre-pasted. To activate the adhesive on the paper, immerse one strip right side out in room-temperature water in a water tray or bathtub. Beginning at your starting point, line your paper up at the ceiling, carefully unfolding the top half of the paper and placing the side edge of the strip along the measured line. Allow a few extra inches of paper along the top and bottom which will be trimmed off later.

When you have aligned the half top of the paper to its vertical measure line, open the bottom half carefully and gently smooth the wallpaper against the wall with your hands. Begin at one edge and work your way across, using a smoothing brush or damp sponge to smooth out any air bubbles. A seam roller may also be used to smooth down the edges of the wallpaper.

When tackling the corners of the room, measure from the last full-width strip of wallpaper to the corner. Add an inch to that measurement and cut the strip to that width. Apply the wallpaper to the wall, making sure to totally smooth it in the corners. Then make a small slit from the top of the strip to the wall to allow the strip to lay flat at the ceiling. Repeat the same at the bottom and then trim off the top and bottom.

A wide-blade putty knife can be used to hold down the wallpaper strip at the ceiling. A quality utility knife can then be used to trim the excess wallpaper at the top and bottom.
